2008 Annie Awards

Last week the nominations for the 2008 Annie Awards were announced.  While the big award, the Best Animated Feature, is usually dominated by the latest talking animal or car film from Pixar or Dreamworks or Disney, there are some interesting nominees in other categories this year.  In the Best Animated Home Entertainment category there are two entries from Warner Bros. Animation and one from 20th Century Fox.  Justice League: The New Frontier is a retelling of the classic DC Comics.  A Justice League origin story set just prior to the political and social upheaval of the sixties.  The former Fox television, sci-fi sitcom, Futurama has recently returned with a series of direct-to-DVDs adventures.  The second entry, Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs, has been nominated in this category.  And lastly of note, the animated prequel to the summer blockbuster, The Dark Knight, has received a nod.  Batman: Gotham Knight is a collection of short stories produced by acclaimed anime directors and studios scripted by American writers.  I will be reviewing all of these in the coming weeks.

To check out all of the nominees visit the Annie Awards website.  The Annie Awards are scheduled for Friday, January 30, 2009.
